Due to continuously (for a number of years) and regularly colouring my hair (yes, the grey problem!!) means that my hair takes quite beating. A few years ago, I noticed that the ends were splitting quicker than they had previously and that my hair was quite dry and “frizzy” (normally it is quite kinky but was frizzing even when I dried t with a hair dryer) so I tried out Coconut Oil and have never looked back. I use coconut oil on both mine and my daughters hair instead of normal conditioner and find it so much more manageable and so much less knotted. (This is a huge bonus for anyone who has a daughter with long hair as it stops all of the arguing and whining when it is time to get ready in the mornings – a quick brush and up into a ponytail or plait and were done!!)
If you are looking to grow out your hair, you might want to think past just waiting or trying to take supplements. While following a healthy diet can certainly help, something else that has shown to be effective in many people is using coconut oil. Here are some different ways to use coconut oil in order to help your hair grow long and healthy.
Create a Simple Coconut Oil Mask or use as Conditioner
This is one of the most common ways that people use coconut in their hair. It is the perfect leave-in conditioner, or you can use it as a hair mask that you will rinse out. The great thing about coconut oil is that it is safe to leave in your hair overnight. It doesn’t leave behind any weird residue or odd texture to your hair. First warm the coconut oil by placing it under warm water, then wash your hair or at least get it wet. Rub some of the coconut oil on your damp hair, massaging it into your hair. Leave it on overnight, or for about an hour for best results. You should rinse it with warm water, not too hot or too cold. You can either replace your current conditioner with it. Or just use it once a week in addition to your regular hair conditioner. Coconut oil is suitable for all different hair types.
Prevent or remove Dandruff With This Shampoo
If you have been struggling with dandruff and buildup on your scalp, you will be happy you discovered coconut oil! This is actually quite the magical elixir when it comes to dandruff. Coconut oil contains no chemicals, so it is not harsh on your hair or your scalp, and can be used if you have some sensitivity or scratches on your head. This is something you can’t get with store-bought dandruff shampoo.
To prevent dandruff, all you have to do is put a small amount of the oil in the palm of your hands, warm it up by rubbing it between your hands, and use it just like shampoo. Make sure you let it sit on your scalp for a few minutes to really work through that buildup.
To remove dandruff on your scalp combine some the oil with lemon juice. This simple combination allows you to cleanse your hair and scalp, which also detoxes your scalp at the same time. You just want to make sure you have 2 part coconut oil for 1 part lemon juice, so you don’t overpower it with the lemon. Combine the ingredient and add them to a container that you can keep in your bathroom. When you are ready to use it, scoop a small amount, and massage it really well into your scalp, leaving it for a few minutes. Comb it through your hair so it is even, then rinse it out with cool water, never hot water.
Make a Hair Scent Mask
This hair mask not only helps with buildup on your scalp and to moisturise your hair and leave it shiny, but it can also help give your hair a wonderful scent. You are getting mild coconut scent from the coconut oil, plus a stronger scent from the essential oils you choose to use. This helps to cover up the smell of the environment in your hair, as well as any hair styling treatments you like to use. You just need to melt your coconut oil in hot water, then mix in some heavily scented essential oils. Rosemary, peppermint, and lavender are really great for this purpose, but go ahead and just use your favourites.
Combine it With Another Oil
This helps to further give you more bounce and shine to your hair instead of just using straight coconut oil. You want to use other natural oils that won’t leave your hair greasy, such as almond oil or olive oil. Avoid other cooking oils like vegetable or canola oil. Combine with the oils together, massage into your scalp, and rinse out after a few minutes.
Add More Shine
Are you looking for a way to get more shine in your hair? If so, you should definitely start adding some coconut oil to it. This is one of the many reasons to use coconut oil on your hair. Even if you use a good conditioner that leaves your hair feeling soft and silky. Shiny hair can bring life to it, allowing it to look just as healthy as it feels. Just need a small amount of coconut oil added to your hair regularly to give it some luster and shine.
Get Rid of Tangles With Coconut Oil
Coconut oil can also help to smooth out your hair by getting rid of tangles and frizz. Add some oil to your hair whenever you are struggling with knots, and they will be much easier to remove.
